Europe and Slovakia are in for a cold shock! Prepare for extreme cold: The temperature can drop to -20°C

The coming days will bring a significant drop in temperatures to Europe, as cold air from the north will penetrate over the continent. According to meteorologists, from causes sharp cooling and the gradual return of winter precipitation in the form of snow. While December 2025 was marked by temperatures above the long-term average, January 2026 should be noticeably colder.

Forecasts for the first half of January indicate that we are in for a significant drop in temperatures, which will gradually be reflected in snowfall. On New Year’s, we experienced a slight warming – temperatures reached values ​​of around +5 °C, and a similar course of weather should continue. All-day frost is expected only in the north, especially in the Žilina region, where it should also snow.

After the snowfall, gradual clearing is expected. At the same time, a spur of higher pressure will begin to assert itself over our area. In the following hours, the weather should be mostly sunny, but very cold. Only in the lowlands in the west and south can the daily temperatures slightly rise above zero. From January 5, however, steady frosts are expected even in the lowlands.

The nights will be even colder. Significant frost is expected throughout Slovakia, while the temperature can drop to -20 °C in areas with snow cover. Almost all of Europe will experience cold, wintry weather. In the second half of next week (from January 8) it is expected in the interior of the continent deepening of pressure troughs, which will gradually bring snowfall.
