Fire hits Shopping Tijuca in Rio

A fire hit Shopping Tijuca this Friday (2 January 2026), in the north of Rio de Janeiro. The images, published on the social network X, show the moment when smoke begins to spread throughout the place.

Videos circulating on the internet show customers leaving the mall via the vehicle exit ramp. The shopping center was evacuated as a safety measure.

To the Poder360the (Rio de Janeiro Fire Department) reported that the fire originated in the basement of the building, at 6:28 pm. Initially, the Tijuca Barracks was mobilized and, shortly afterwards, 5 more barracks were also mobilized to contain the fire. The operation is still being carried out on site.

To date, 13 vehicles and around 40 soldiers are involved in the operation. “The fire occurs in an area that is difficult to access, in the basement of the building, which requires specialized technical action and the use of mechanical ventilation equipment to disperse the smoke”declared CBMERJ in a note.

According to firefighters, 4 people were rescued by firefighters and SAMU (Mobile Emergency Care Service). Two of them, rescued by the Fire Department, were admitted to Hospital Souza Aguiar, in the center of Rio de Janeiro.
