Sitting in an armchair looking at the camera, with his famous nasal voice still striking, 94, wishes his friends “a great 2026 and may God bless all your actions.”
The video was recorded by Alberto de Holanda Haddad, aka Albertinho Maluf, 38, who created an Instagram profile to publicize the image of the former mayor and former governor of São Paulo. “We reached more than 6 million visits this month”, he celebrates.
A businessman, he presents himself as Maluf’s nephew, but he is actually a cousin: his great-grandmother was the aunt of Salim Farah Maluf, the former mayor’s father.
Contemporary posts by Maluf are interspersed on the profile with images from past campaigns and debates.
“My idea is to do justice to his work, which was and is the public man who accomplished the most. People today, with the internet, are having access to this rescue”, says the relative.
He says that the comments on the posts, mostly complimentary and nostalgic, are a thermometer that the politician still finds a lot of resonance among the population – and not just among Malufistas, who voted religiously for him for decades.
“You get a lot of comments from people who didn’t vote or weren’t friendly towards him and today they are”, says the person responsible for the profile.
Affiliated to the PP, like his illustrious relative, Albertinho is mentioned in the party as a possible candidate in next year’s election. In 2022, he tried to become a state deputy, but was unsuccessful.
For now, he is not talking about another attempt. “In fact, many ask, but I have my life in the private sector, it’s still very early and I’m not thinking about it now”, he says.
