PT condemns US attack on Venezuela and capture of Nicolás Maduro

O PT (Workers’ Party) condemned the United States military operation in Venezuela in the early hours of Saturday (3), as well as the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.

“The Workers’ Party (PT) strongly condemns the military aggression of the United States of America against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and its people. Given the facts disclosed, the act is characterized as a kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and the First Lady”says the statement.

“In a previous note, the PT had already expressed deep concern about the escalation of the conflict, which has political and economic motivations, and warned of the serious risks to regional stability”, he adds.

The PT also stated that the conflict represents “a serious concern for Brazil” as it shares around two thousand kilometers of border with Venezuela. “Latin America must remain a zone of peace”, he points out.

For the party, the history of Brazilian foreign policy “supports peaceful resolution of controversies, non-intervention and respect for sovereignty as foundations of international coexistence”.

“Thus, we reiterate that the sovereignty of the people, the peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for international law constitute central principles of the Workers’ Party’s foreign policy and indispensable paths to preserving peace and stability in Latin America”, the note concludes.

The statement was made after the president, during a large-scale military operation carried out in Venezuelan territory in the early hours of today.

The Republican Senator Mike Lee stated in conversation with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, that the purpose of the military operation and capture was precisely to ensure that Maduro answers for these crimes on American soil.
