STF maintains Filipe Martins’ arrest after custody hearing

The STF (Supreme Federal Court) maintained this Friday (2) the preventive detention of Filipe Martins, former international relations advisor under Jair Bolsonaro (PL), after .

The hearing was held via videoconference and led by the assistant judge from Moraes’ office, Flávia Martins de Carvalho.

The custody hearing is a standard procedure carried out to verify whether the arrest was made by the police in compliance with legal standards.

Martins was preventively arrested by the PF (Federal Police), just this Friday, for failing to comply with precautionary measures.

According to Moraes’ decision that determined preventive detention, Martins used LinkedIn even after a decision that determined not to use any social network.

Lawyer Jeffrey Chiquini, who defends the convicted man, informed that “this is another arrest for no reason”, that his client is the target of persecution and that he should appeal the decision.

Before being arrested preventively, Martins was under house arrest to avoid the risk of escape. Now, he is imprisoned in a closed regime, on preventive status.

The former advisor was sentenced to 21 years in prison for participating in the coup plot. The criminal action, however, has not yet become final and, therefore, the sentence is not yet being counted.
