Venezuela: Lula says the US crosses an unacceptable line – 01/03/2026 – World

The president () repudiated the AI attacks and stated that they cross an “unacceptable” line. The president says that attacking countries, in flagrant violation of international law, is the first step towards a world of violence.

“Attacking countries, in flagrant violation of international law, is the first step towards a world of violence, chaos and instability, where the law of the strongest prevails over multilateralism. The condemnation of the use of force is consistent with the position that Brazil has always adopted in recent situations in other countries and regions”, wrote Lula’s account on X (formerly Twitter).

The US attack on Venezuela this Saturday (3) is considered the biggest intervention against Venezuela in decades. The government bombed the capital, Caracas, and captured the dictator and his wife. According to Trump, Maduro will be taken to the US to face trial for narcoterrorism and crimes related to drug trafficking.

“The action recalls the worst moments of interference in Caribbean politics and threatens the preservation of the region as a zone of peace. The international community, through the United Nations, needs to respond vigorously to this episode. Brazil condemns these actions and remains available to promote the path of dialogue and cooperation”, Lula’s note also says.

Before the official demonstration, the secretary general of Itamaraty, Maria Laura da Rocha, had already met with ministers to discuss the international situation. Brazilian diplomacy has been gathering information about the attack since dawn.

Lula is participating in the meeting remotely, as he is in Marambaia (RJ), where he spent New Year’s Eve.

In addition to ministers who are in Brasília, the meeting should be attended by representatives of the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Justice, as well as the head of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, as one of the agendas should be the situation at Brazilian borders.

At the beginning of December, Lula spoke by phone with , about the military escalation of those against the neighboring country. The Trump administration had already mobilized military forces around the country since around September 2025, under allegations of aiming to combat drug trafficking in the region.

It was the first conversation between the two since the election in Venezuela in the middle of last year, when Maduro was declared the winner despite allegations of fraud by the opposition.

In the same week that he spoke with Maduro, Lula also spoke to discuss the fight against international organized crime. According to information from the Brazilian government at the time, the situation with Venezuela was not addressed.

Ministers (General Secretariat), Camilo Santana (Education) and Sonia Guajajara (Indigenous Peoples) also spoke out on the topic, criticizing the US intervention and warning about the risk to the lives of people in the regions.

Boulos called the US government a criminal and accused the country of using the pretext of defending democracy to invade territories and explore the region’s oil.

Also on social media, the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho (MDB) criticized the attacks and Maduro’s capture, and stated that he is experiencing a historic setback this Saturday (3).

“That Maduro should not and could no longer remain as a dictator, there is no doubt. The question is not that. The question is whether the ends justify the means and whether in Latin America we are mere colonies as when the first Europeans arrived here. The answer is no!”, he wrote.
