British and French air forces jointly hit an underground facility of the Islamic State in Syria

The British and French air forces carried out an attack on an underground facility of the Islamic State in Syria. The target was hit by precision bombs, with no civilian casualties.

British and French air forces launched a joint strike on Saturday against a suspected underground weapons depot in Syria used by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, Britain’s Ministry of Defense said. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the DPA and Reuters agencies and the statement of the British Ministry.

“Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the facility; although a detailed assessment is now being carried out, initial indications are that the target was successfully hit,” the British ministry said. Britain used Eurofighter Typhoon fighters for the strike.

Operation without civilian casualties

There were no civilian dwellings in the area before the attack, the Ministry of Defense clarified. All of his planes that were part of the operation have already returned safely.

Royal Air Force jets are patrolling over Syria to prevent a resurgence of the IS group, which ruled parts of Syria until 2019. The British ministry says intelligence analysis has uncovered an underground facility in the mountains north of Palmyra that is believed to have been used to store weapons and explosives.

Importance of the operation for the region

“This action shows our British leadership and determination to stand side by side with our allies to thwart any return of Daesh (the Arabic acronym for IS) and its dangerous and violent ideology in the Middle East,” British Defense Secretary John Healey said in a statement.
