Pierogi are a dish that is hard to resist. Whether sweet or savory, they delight both adults and children. Well-known are dumplings stuffed with cabbage, blueberries, or the famous Russian ale Few people have heard of a filling made of prunes and nuts. I tried them for the first time at my mother-in-law’s and I was hooked. Each bite evokes associations with home warmth and winter aura.
Dumplings with dried plums and nuts have a long tradition in some regions of Poland, which is strongly related to Lent cuisine and the rhythm of rural life. Although in some homes they are prepared as one of the Christmas Eve dishes, few people know them on a daily basis.
It’s a pity, because they delight with their taste and unique aroma. Spices play an important role here, because they emphasize the taste of dried fruits and nuts, which, interestingly, were present in the countryside in ancient times the basis of winter supplies.
The taste and aroma of dried plums combined with nuts and spices, enclosed in a perfectly soft and elastic dumpling dough, creates a snack that’s hard to resist. It’s perfect a proposal for a sweet dinner dish for winter time or a sweet snack. Covered with cream, they taste great.

These dumplings will certainly bring a breath of freshness to your family’s menu. As they are very filling, they do not need to be prepared in large quantities.
To prepare the stuffing for dumplings with prunes and nuts you will need:
- 300 g seedless
- 150 g walnuts (or hazelnuts)
- 4-5 tablespoons of honey
- 100 ml of tea
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- Cinnamon
- Ground cloves
- Optional: a few tablespoons of cream
Preparation method:
Start by preparing the dumpling dough according to a proven recipe. While it is “resting”, prepare the aromatic stuffing. For this purpose finely chop the dried plums and pour the tea over them. Cook over low heat, covered, for about 10-15 minutes until soft. Strain them and leave the poured liquid.
Grind or chop the nuts finely. Mix with cooked plums, cinnamon, ground cloves, butter and honey. Season according to your taste and preferences. Place the resulting filling onto the dough discs you cut out. Glue the dumplings together thoroughly and cook in salted water.
Serve the cooked dumplings decorated with cream combined with the juice remaining after cooking the plums and honey. Enjoy your meal!
