The first part probably comes from the name Nela, while the second (“-sława”) was most often used to create so-called wishing names. “O” is a link between these two elements.

The name “Nela” probably comes from Petronela or Kornelia. The first part of the name Nelosława may also refer to the character Nel Rawlinson from literature. This was the name of the hero of the novel “In Desert and Wilderness” by Henryk Sienkiewicz.

Prof. Ph.D. Aleksandra Cieślikowa suggested that giving this unusual name could have been an attempt to combine Slavic tradition with modern times. The name is so rare that it is not included in Polish dictionaries. What’s more, the woman who wears them, born in Rawa Mazowiecka, admitted in her letter to the Polish Language Council that they cause surprise and that offices and institutions constantly distort them.
