PT members believe that the US president’s attack reinforces the speech defending national sovereignty in October’s presidential election.
The topic became a priority last year, in the context of the sanctions applied to Brazil by Trump, which were later partially withdrawn. It should be one of the two main themes of Lula’s re-election campaign, alongside the fight against social inequality, through the taxation of the “super rich”.
In the opinion of PT members, , they make defending the country against foreign interference even more central for Lula. In the sanctions episode, Lula’s popularity rose when he confronted Trump.
In the same vein, there is a fear that the American president will try to somehow interfere in the Brazilian election to support the candidacy of an opponent, especially Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ).
The fact that right-wing leaders celebrated Trump’s action was seen by Lula’s allies as a golden opportunity to highlight differences in position on the issue.
