Brazil should speak at the UN Security Council in a meeting on the attack on Venezuela

Brazil is expected to speak at the United Nations (UN) Security Council (SC) meeting, scheduled for this Monday, 5th, in New York (USA). The meeting will discuss the invasion of the American Army in Venezuela, which culminated in the arrest of the dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in the early hours of Saturday, 3. The couple was taken to the United States, where they will also appear in court this Monday.

The information was published by the newspaper O Globo and confirmed to Estadão by Itamaraty. The Brazilian representative at the UN, Sergio Danese, “should speak on behalf of Brazil”.

Although it is not a permanent member of the Security Council and has voting power, Brazil will use rule 37 of the body’s regulations. The regulation allows a UN Member State to speak out and express its point of view in group discussions on a subject of interest to the country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not anticipate the content of Danese’s statement at the meeting, but Brazil’s representative at the UN is expected to endorse the statements made by the Brazilian government, which repudiated the attacks by American forces in Caracas.

On Saturday, the 3rd, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned the action of Donald Trump’s government in Venezuela and stated that the bombings in Venezuelan territory and the capture of the Chavista leader “cross an unacceptable line”.

“These acts represent a very serious affront to Venezuela’s sovereignty and yet another extremely dangerous precedent for the entire international community,” the president wrote in X.

Lula also stated that the international community, through the United Nations (UN), needs to respond “rigorously” to the episode. “Brazil condemns these actions and remains available to promote the path of dialogue and cooperation”, he added.

Maduro and Flores were captured last Saturday, in Caracas, following the Absolute Resolution military operation. The United States Army invaded Venezuelan territory during the early hours of the morning, threw bombs and, within a few hours, extracted the couple, without facing strong resistance.

They were sheltering in the Tiuna fort, a military base in the capital, and were taken to the United States where they will face charges of involvement in drug trafficking. According to The New York Times, at least 80 people, including civilians and military personnel, died during the action – none of them were American soldiers.
