In an official statement, the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they disrespect the fundamental principles of relations between sovereign States and constitute undue interference in the country’s internal affairs.
According to the text, Colombian President Gustavo Petro was legitimately elected by popular will and holds office in accordance with the Constitution. Any attempt to discredit it, directly or indirectly, according to the government, violates norms of international law.
The Foreign Ministry also highlighted that the American president’s statements contradict principles of the United Nations Charter, such as sovereign equality between States, non-intervention and mutual respect, considered pillars of the international system.

Trump’s statements came one day after the American president confirmed a military operation in Venezuela, in which US forces captured Nicolás Maduro on accusations of links to drug trafficking.
Asked by journalists about the possibility of a similar action in Colombia, Trump responded that the so-called “Operation Colombia” seemed like a good idea, in addition to verbally attacking Gustavo Petro’s government.
The Colombian government reinforced that disagreements between countries must be dealt with through diplomatic channels, with dialogue, cooperation and respect for international norms, and stated that it will continue to defend its sovereignty and institutions.
