Explainer: What does Trump want from the Americas?

After the invasion of Venezuela and the kidnapping of the presidential couple in Caracas, Trump suggested that several regions could face intervention from the United States. The President referred to Colombia as a cocaine-producing country that “kills young Americans,” and even blamed President Gustavo Petro for coordinating drug trafficking. The rhetoric towards the Colombian leader indicates how Trump has strategic interests in the country. Firstly, because it wants a leader closer to Washington alongside Venezuela. And, secondly, because he is interested in the natural riches of the Andean country. For Trump, Colombia is a non-negligible regional pillar.

In the case of Cuba, Donald Trump speaks of the need to protect human rights and freedom of expression. The Administration also rejects the support that Havana has provided to Chavista Venezuela. Furthermore, the Republicans want to mobilize, as they have always done, the Cuban-American electorate, which is very important in some parts of the US, but nowhere like the metropolitan region of Miami, South Florida.

To Mexico, Trump points to the fact that it allows permanent illegal emigration to the United States. He also says that the federal government is not doing enough to stop drug cartels, which President Cláudia Sheinbaum rejects. The Trump Administration wants to rebalance what it sees as unfair trade relations and Trump also takes advantage of the opportunity to benefit electorally from a political discourse against migration. The Mexican case is a unique domestic-external problem, that is, one that the President uses to blame all the ills of the USA.

Further north, Trump says he is interested in buying Greenland from Denmark. He says the United States needs to protect itself from Russian and Chinese influence. But, in this case, it does not hide that it has an interest in the natural resources of the autonomous territory of Denmark. And it wants to control new maritime routes. For some analysts, Donald Trump’s interest in Greenland is linked to the political, energy and military future of the United States.
