Freezing week: cold leaves nine districts under warning

The IPMA warns of a “sharp drop in temperature” starting this Monday. There are several districts with negative temperatures.

The districts of Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Castelo Branco and Portalegre will be under warning due to low temperatures between 07:21 on Monday and 09:00 on Wednesday, as well as Évora, Beja and Faro between 00:00 on Tuesday and 09:00 on Wednesday.

After a “sharp drop” this Monday, temperatures are only expected to rise again from Thursday. Until then, the maximum varies between 2 and 17 °C and the minimum between -4 and 11 °C.

Snowfall above 600/800 meters of altitude is also expected in the North and Center and the formation of ice or frost in some places, especially in the interior.

What to do to protect yourself from the cold?

Awarns of the risk of respiratory diseases, worsening of chronic conditions and accidents caused by the cold. It is recommended:

  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature;
  • Wearing clothes in layers;
  • Protect your extremities with a hat, gloves and warm socks;
  • Wear non-slip shoes to avoid falling on the ice;
  • Keep your skin hydrated, especially your face, hands and lips;
  • Drink water and hot drinks and eat soup;
  • Increase consumption of foods rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables;
  • When outdoors, avoid physical exertion.
