“Boy, I’ll tell you, we’ve been singing every week for over a year and a half. I’ve never done a nervous show. I’m a very relaxed guy, but this one gave me a hard time before. I said ‘my God, I’m at Maraca, man'”, he said.
Afterwards, the singer mentioned the symbolism of the place and the historical figures who have passed through the stadium. “Pelé, Zagalo, Zico, everyone has made history here”, he added.
Grelo also commented that the performance marked his first time singing in Rio de Janeiro, a city that does not have the musical genre to which he belongs as a predominant tradition.
“I had never sung in Rio, right? It’s the first time I’m singing in the state, I already started at Maraca, thank God and my godparents Henrique & Juliano too, very grateful for the invitation”, he stated.
The singer revealed that there was an expectation regarding the reaction of the Rio public. “I also had this apprehension of ‘wow, this is the land of pagode and funk, will they receive it…’”, he said.
Grelo reported that nervousness gave way to relief when he noticed the audience’s response: “When he said ‘it’s Grelo’ and everyone screamed, it gave relief to my heart, I said ‘thank God. Thank you God, for everything.’”
During the interview, the artist also spoke about his recent experience of becoming a father, describing the change in routine and feeling when he arrived home. “It’s wonderful. Everyone always said ‘man, you’ll only understand when you’re a father’. And it really was like that”, he reported.
Grelo further explained that the experience of fatherhood brought sensations that he could not imagine before. “I was trying to imagine, but when I saw my daughter in my lap, when I get home now, it’s something surreal. The feeling of longing I feel before leaving home is crazy”, he concluded.
