Vehicles traveling on Portuguese roads are required to undergo mandatory periodic inspection, an essential procedure to ensure that they comply with safety and operating rules. Every year, these mandatory tests undergo a price update and, this year, the values are rising again, in line with inflation.
The update was confirmed by the Mobility and Transport Institute (IMT), which released the new prices to be applied next year. At issue is an increase of more than 2% compared to last year, reflecting the annual review of rates based on inflation.
New prices for 2026
In the case of light vehicles, the mandatory periodic inspection now costs 37.47 euros, according to the technology portal Pplware. Compared to the value currently in force, this is an increase of 83 cents per inspection. Heavy vehicles also cannot escape the climb. The inspection now costs 56.08 euros, which represents an increase of 1.23 euros compared to the price charged in 2025.
The update also covers motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles, whose periodic inspection now costs 18.87 euros. Trailers and semi-trailers now pay the same price as light vehicles, set at 37.47 euros.
As regards reinspection, the new price rises to 9.40 euros. This value applies when the vehicle does not pass on the first attempt and requires a new check, says the same source.

Other services associated with car inspections also remain, with prices already defined. The extraordinary inspection now costs 130.80 euros, while the inspection to assign or replace the license plate costs 93.52 euros. For those who need a duplicate of the inspection certificate, the cost will be 3.52 euros.
These will therefore be the prices for the Mandatory Periodic Inspection in 2026, with VAT included: light vehicles 37.47 euros, heavy vehicles 56.08 euros, trailers and semi-trailers 37.47 euros and motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles 18.87 euros.
