Maduro’s opponent says normalization depends on respect for the popular will

Politician Edmundo González Urrutia, opponent of Nicolás Maduro, stated that the normalization of the political situation in Venezuela depends on respect for the popular will expressed at the polls and the release of political prisoners. In a statement on social media, he said that the current moment, after the capture of the president by the USA, marks a turning point in the country’s recent history and is “an important step, but not enough”.

“The real normalization of the country will only be possible when the majority will expressed by the Venezuelan people on July 28 is respected, without ambiguity,” he stated, in reference to the last elections held in Venezuela.

At the time, Maduro was declared the winner of the presidential race, but the process ran without transparency or sufficient evidence of his supposed victory. As a result, the election was contested by Venezuelan opposition politicians and a large part of the international community.

In the published video, Maduro’s opponent addressed the Venezuelan Armed Forces and security bodies. “Your duty is to fulfill and enforce the sovereign mandate expressed on July 28, 2024”, he reinforced.

González also said that the democratic transition in a “serious and responsible manner” also depends on the release of all those detained for political reasons, which he classified as “hostages of a system of persecution”. “No democratic transition is possible as long as there is a single Venezuelan unjustly imprisoned,” he said.

The politician concluded by saying that the country is experiencing a “historic” moment, which must be conducted with serenity, clarity and democratic commitment. “Venezuela needs truth, justice and reconciliation, without impunity.”

This Saturday (3), Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, defended that González Urrutia assume the country’s presidency after the deposition of Nicolás Maduro through the United States military attack.

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, stated in a post that “the transition that is to come must be peaceful, democratic and respectful of the will of the Venezuelan people”. He then stated that he hopes that “President Edmundo González Urrutia, elected in 2024, can ensure this transition as quickly as possible”.
