PSP records 10 fatalities and more than 1,100 detainees in Operation Safe Parties

The number of deaths registered by the PSP has risen, since the last report, from six to 10. The PSP spokesperson also reports 36 serious injuries and 6,150 infractions, the majority for driving at excessive speed.

The balance sheet of the PSP Operation Safe Parties 2025-2026 points to 10 deaths and 36 serious injuries on Portuguese roads in a “period of 18 days of intense operational activity”.

According to the Intendant Sérgio Soares, PSP spokesperson, 1,141 citizens were arrested, more than 700 of them for road crimes. “6,150 citizens were also approached for road traffic offences”.

The spokesperson warns of the “extremely high number” regarding road crime and states that the balance does not leave this force “satisfied”.

The majority of the more than six thousand administrative offenses were due to “driving at excessive speed, followed by driving under the influence of alcohol”.

“In terms of excessive alcohol, in criminal and administrative matters, 531 citizens were intercepted”, says Sérgio Soares.

With regard to accident rates, the spokesperson reported 2,499 accidents, which resulted in 753 injuries, 36 of which were seriously injured, and 10 fatalities, which means that compared to the previous year, “we have more accidents, more serious injuries and more fatalities”.

This number is only the one registered by the PSP. This Sunday, the joint balance between the GNR and the PSP pointed to 23 fatalities, of which six were registered by the PSP and the rest by the GNR.

The number of deaths thus rises to 27, with GNR data still to be updated.
