The defense made by the minister (Port and Airports) that the possibility of the death penalty for perpetrators of feminicide be admitted embarrassed members of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva government and even surprised members of his party, the Republicans. According to a member of the party, the minister’s position is individual, and not partisan.
In an interview with CNN Brasil on December 22, Costa Filho commented
“The week before last I saw a citizen who killed his wife in front of his children. There is no way for a citizen like that, a citizen like that… We, Brazil, even have to evaluate the death penalty for this type of individual,” he stated.
The defense of the death penalty is associated with right-wing politicians. According to some legal interpretations, the measure violates essential clauses of the Constitution and is therefore impossible to be implemented.
In the view of government leadership, the minister’s mention of the topic would be related to the elections. and would be seeking to make a gesture to the more conservative electorate.
When contacted, the minister did not respond to the Panel.
