Czech war veteran Miloslav Masopust, who also participated in the Slovak National Uprising (SNP), died on Sunday, January 4 at the age of 101. The Czech Ministry of Defense announced this on the X social network on Monday, reports TASR in Prague.
According to the department, he was an important figure in modern military history and was among the iconic heroes of the Second World War. The Czech army called Lieutenant General Masopust a hero of the Eastern Front. “He dedicated his life to the service of his country – from the battles of the 1st Czechoslovak Corps in the USSR through the liberation of Slovakia to many years of service in the Czechoslovak artillery. Bravery, honor, responsibility and a deep patriotic attitude were the pillars of his life,” the army said.
She highlighted that even after the end of active service, Masopust participated in preserving historical memory and passing on experience to the next generations. She pointed out that he was one of the last direct witnesses of the biggest conflict in modern history.
For his service, he received many awards, for example the Order of the White Lion, the Czechoslovak War Cross 1939, the Czechoslovak Medal for bravery before the enemy, the Order of the Patriotic War II. degree or Medal of the President of the Slovak Republic.
