Swiss police: 16 latest victims of New Year's bar fire identified

The fire at Le Constellation bar caused 40 deaths and 119 injuries

The last 16 victims of the fire that broke out in a bar in the Swiss mountain resort of Crans-Montana on New Year’s Eve were identified this Sunday, police said, cited by Reuters.

This means that all 40 victims of the fire, which broke out in the Constellation bar in the early hours of January 1, have now been identified, Swiss police said.

Police said they could not give details about their identities. However, according to the website, ten of the new victims identified are Swiss, most of them young people aged between 15 and 20, as well as a 31-year-old person. Among the new victims identified are three 16-year-old Italians, as well as an 18-year-old Romanian, a 39-year-old Frenchman and an 18-year-old Turkish man.

The Portuguese Government, this Sunday, the death of the young Portuguese woman who was missing following the fire at the Le Constellation bar. She is a 22-year-old girl, born in Santa Maria da Feira, but raised in Switzerland from a very young age. She was a teacher and had gone to celebrate New Year’s Eve at the bar in Crans-Montana with a group of friends.

The fire also caused 119 injuries.

A criminal investigation has been opened against the managers of the “Le Constellation” bar, the cantonal police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Valais said in a joint statement on Saturday. The couple is suspected of manslaughter, negligent bodily harm and negligent arson.

According to the first elements and testimonies, pyrotechnic candles could be the cause of the deadly accident. The investigation should also focus on the placement of the acoustic foam on the ceiling that caught fire, to determine whether this soundproofing material complied with regulations and whether it was the cause of the incident.
