The American president spoke of Washington’s “dominance” in the Western Hemisphere.
Countries on the American continent do not belong to any superpower, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday after her American counterpart, Donald Trump, spoke of Washington’s “dominance” in the Western Hemisphere following the military intervention against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Trump described the weekend US military operation in Venezuela as an update of the Monroe Doctrine. It is a concept formulated in 1823 by the fifth American president, James Monroe. According to this doctrine, European powers do not have the right to interfere in the affairs of independent states on the territory of the American continent, and the United States of America will consider their possible military actions on the territory of the continent as a “threat to its peace and security” and “a manifestation of a hostile attitude towards the USA”.
“The Monroe Doctrine is a big thing, but we’ve gone way, really way beyond that. Now they call it the Donroe document,” Trump said at a news conference. “America’s dominance in the Western Hemisphere will never be challenged again,” Trump added.
Sheinbaum strongly objected to these statements on Monday. “America does not belong to any doctrine or any great power. The American continent belongs to the peoples of every country that makes it up,” declared the Mexican leader.
US forces stormed the Venezuelan capital of Caracas early Saturday morning, captured Maduro and his wife and took them to New York to stand trial on drug-trafficking charges.
Trump has since threatened other leftist governments in the region, including Cuba, Colombia and Mexico. He specifically warned the latter country to do more to combat drug trafficking.
