Croatian defender Gvardiol fractures tibia and will need surgery

Injury occurred during the second half of the Premier League match against Chelsea

Croatian defender do fractured his tibia during the 1-1 draw against over the weekend, the club announced this Monday (5). “The Croatian suffered a fracture to the tibia in his right leg. The injury occurred during the second half of the Premier League match against Chelsea,” City said in a statement, adding that the defender will need to undergo surgery.

Gvardiol has played 16 Premier League matches this season, scoring two goals. Gvardiol’s absence adds to that of fellow defender Rúben Dias, who was also injured in the match against Chelsea. The severity of the Portuguese player’s injury has not yet been disclosed.

These two casualties further aggravate City’s defensive problems, which are already without John Stones, out for a month due to a thigh injury, and Rayan Aït-Nouri, who is with the Algerian team in the African Cup of Nations. Manchester City is second in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Arsenal.
