The finals between Germany and Argentina were the most repeated in the World Cups. In 1986, in Mexico, the Germans succumbed to Maradona’s genius. The payback came four years later, in Italy. The goal scored by Brehme, from the penalty spot, guaranteed the European country’s third title. The fourth German title only came twenty-four years later.

Mário Götze’s solitary goal, in extra time, secured Germany’s last World Cup title. Coach Joachim Löw’s men, who had beaten Brazil 7-1, in the semi-final, at Mineirão, suffered to defeat Messi’s Argentina, at Maracanã.
After the match, the German coach told the 22-year-old Götze: “You are better than Messi”.
