Reactions to the wave of protests in Iran: The situation is escalating

Iranian security forces have been cracking down on recent protests that have left at least 27 people dead, including five children. The situation is closely monitored by the non-profit organization Iran Human Rights.

Iranian security forces have killed at least 27 people, including five minors, since the latest wave of protests began. This was stated by the Norwegian non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights (IHR) on Tuesday, writes TASR according to the AFP agency.

  • At least 27 protesters were killed by Iranian security forces.
  • Five minors are among the victims.
  • More than 1,000 people were detained.

“At least 27 protesters were killed by gunfire or other forms of violence by security forces in eight provinces. Five of those killed were confirmed to be children,” the IHR said after 10 days of protests. According to her information, more than 1,000 people were detained.

Killed and detained

At least 12 people, including members of the security forces, have been killed since the protests began, according to official Iranian media reports.

The IHR accused security forces of killing at least six people on Saturday in a single incident when they fired into a crowd in the Malekshahi district of Iran’s western Ilam province. On Sunday, security forces reportedly raided a hospital there, where injured protesters were taken and several were arrested.

Waves of demonstrations

The founder and director of IHR is neuroscientist Mahmúd Amiry-Moghaddam, who immigrated from Iran to Norway with his family as a child.

The demonstrations in late December were sparked by the economic crisis and spread from Tehran to at least 26 of the 31 provinces. According to the IHR, students are demonstrating at more than 20 universities.

Victims of the last wave

The current protests are the strongest since September 16, 2022, when the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody sparked nationwide demonstrations. She was detained by the morality police because she was allegedly not wearing the hijab, a scarf that covers her hair, on her head.

The IHR said it had confirmed more than 550 killings at the time, many of whom had been convicted of taking part in the protests.
