Union demands release of more journalists in Venezuela

Earlier, the union had already demanded the unblocking of more than 60 censored media outlets on the internet in Venezuela.

“It is not possible to move towards a democratic transition while political persecution, censorship and arbitrary arrest persist,” the SNTP said in a statement.

The union also called for the release of trade unionists, human rights defenders and “all people imprisoned for political reasons”.

Furthermore, the note demands security guarantees for the exercise of journalism in Venezuela.

“Freedom of expression, the right to access information and the right to work are not concessions of political power, but fundamental human rights, enshrined in the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and in international treaties signed by the State”, adds the note.
