Mercadona will open a new store just a few minutes from Lisbon: find out where it will be

This Mercadona perfume is already a success in Spain as it lasts 24 hours and costs just €12

Mercadona will reinforce its presence in Portugal with the opening of a supermarket in Alfragide, in the municipality of Amadora. The opening date has not yet been defined, but it is already possible to observe the construction along Estrada Cabos d’Ávila, close to Hotel Moxy, according to the retail website Alimenta+Retail.

Location and dimensions

The project is still at an early stage, but it is expected that the store could serve a population of over 170 thousand inhabitants. According to the digital lifestyle magazine, New in Amadora, the choice of location is related to accessibility and visibility, factors that have been decisive for the chain’s expansion across the country.

The new store is expected to occupy more than a thousand square meters of sales area and have a parking lot. The design will follow Mercadona’s usual standard, with wide corridors, LED lighting and double-glazed entrance, creating a functional and modern environment.

Offer and services

Inside, customers will be able to find all the usual sections of the chain: butchery, fishmonger, delicatessen, bakery, pastry shop, perfumery, household and pet products. The store will also have a wide range of fruits, vegetables and a wine cellar, ensuring variety and freshness.

According to the Alimenta+Retail website, a self-service ready-to-eat area will also be planned, with a dedicated space for on-site dining, a feature that has been gaining popularity among Portuguese consumers.

Expansion in Portugal

The first Mercadona store in the country opened in 2019, in Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia. Since then, the network has expanded rapidly and is currently present in practically all districts. According to the same source, the chain’s strategy has been focused on densely populated urban areas and on complete services, with differentiating products that win over customers.

Among the best-known own products are empanadas, ice cream, culinary preparations and cleaning items, which have become a regular presence in Portuguese homes, according to the same source.

The entry into Alfragide marks Mercadona’s first foray into the municipality of Amadora and should have an impact on the local economy, creating jobs and attracting consumers to the commercial area.

Perspectives and challenges

According to , the opening in Alfragide puts the chain in direct competition with other supermarkets in the region. The same source indicates that the store’s success will depend on the ability to offer quality products at competitive prices and maintain a differentiated shopping experience.

Although there is still no concrete opening date, the Alfragide unit reinforces Mercadona’s intention to consolidate its presence in Portugal and continue the gradual expansion that has characterized recent years.
