A Nestlé Brazil initiated a voluntary and preventive recall of some batches of infant formula due to the risk of contamination by cereulidea toxin produced by the bacteria Bacillus cereus.
Consumers who have products from the specified batches must immediately suspend their use and contact the Customer Service area to return the item for a full refund. The company made the channels available falecom@nestle.com.br or 0800 761 250024 hours a day, 7 days a week service to serve its customers.
According to the company, there are no confirmed reports of adverse reactions related to products listed in the recall anywhere in the world.
The company identified the possible presence of the substance cereulide in an ingredient sourced from a global third-party supplier during routine quality analysis. The supplier has been notified.
Consumption of the toxin can cause persistent vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy, which is excessive drowsiness, slow movement and reasoning, and inability to react and express emotions.
Given this, the Anvisa prohibited the marketing, distribution and use of some batches of branded infant formulas Nestogen, Nan Supreme Pro, Nanlac Supreme Pro, Nanlac Comfor, Nan Sensitive and Alfamino.
According to the company, this is an isolated case. In a statement, Nestlé Brasil informed that it improved its quality protocols after the episode.
