The Department of Defense is conducting a review of the effectiveness of women in ground combat roles, the Pentagon said Tuesday. Before becoming Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth was against the so-called “woke” (progressive) policies, aimed at promoting equal opportunities for minorities, and allowing military personnel to perform combat roles.

The review is being carried out by the Institute for Defense Analysis, a non-profit organization, with the aim of “ensuring that standards are met and that the United States maintains the most lethal Army”, Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson said in a statement. “Our standards for combat arms ranks will be elite, uniform and gender-neutral because the weight of a backpack or a human being does not distinguish between men and women,” Wilson said.

The Pentagon “will not compromise standards to meet quotas or an ideological agenda,” he added. The NPR network, which obtained a Pentagon memo on the topic, reported that Army and Marine Corps leaders were asked to provide data on military preparation, training and performance.

Before his appointment as Defense Secretary, Hegseth said during an episode of the “Shawn Ryan Show” podcast that he opposed the presence of women in combat roles, but not in the military in general.
