Pope Leo XIV. on Wednesday for the first time since his election in May 2025 welcomed cardinals from all over the world to the Vatican for an extraordinary session dedicated to discussions on the future of the Catholic Church. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.
This type of meeting is usually reserved for discussing serious doctrinal, institutional, or pastoral issues that concern the entire church. According to the Vatican News portal it will be two days dedicated to prayer, reflection and sharing together.
Such meetings are extremely rarereports DPA. Unlike regular consistories, which can be held several times a year, they call not only the cardinals from Rome, but all 245 cardinals to an extraordinary consistory. The Consistory is also considered the most important advisory body of the Pope.
According to the Vatican News portal, the program also includes a discussion of two key reform documents of the late Pope Francis. The topics of discussion could also be the right of all Catholics to express themselves about the church and the relationship between the Roman Curia and local churcheswrites DPA. The issue of liturgy is on the agenda, which, according to world agencies, indicates that Leo XIV. wants to address the schisms in the church in connection with the celebration of the traditional Latin mass.
It will be on Thursday the Pope with the cardinals to concelebrate Holy Mass at the Altar of the Cathedral in St. Peter’s Basilica. After that, a morning session is scheduled in the Synod Hall. In the afternoon, the Pope and the cardinals will meet once more, bringing the two-day meeting to a close.
Francis, who died in April 2025, did not rely much on the consistory or the college of cardinals as a whole to govern the church. The convening of this consistory might indicate that Lev wants to respond to the desire of the cardinals to be more involved in deciding the direction of the church.
