Tatra Mountains under avalanche threat: Heavy snowfall threatens tourism

After a heavy snowfall, more than a meter of snow covered the Tatra trails in Poland. Hikers must be aware of avalanche danger and appropriate equipment is essential.

The Polish Tatra National Park (TPN) warned on Wednesday that after heavy snowfall, most of the trails remain buried and in some places their course is not visible. More than a meter of snow fell in some places, reports the Warsaw correspondent TASR according to the PAP agency.

  • New snow fell in Zakopane during heavy snowfall.
  • Local sidewalks are buried, sometimes invisible due to snow.
  • The second degree of avalanche danger applies in the Tatras.

Low cloud cover and strong wind, which created numerous drifts under the walls and on the ridges, significantly complicate movement in the mountains. According to the Polish hydrometeorological institute IMGW, 31 centimeters of snow fell in Zakopane and 55 centimeters on Kasprom vrch. The second level of avalanche danger applies in the area.

At the same time, TPN warns that severe frost and low visibility require experience in moving in winter conditions. Hikers should have and know how to use full avalanche equipment, including crampons, ice ax, helmet and avalanche equipment. The park administration also strongly discourages entering the frozen surfaces of the Tatra meadows.
