Almost the entire territory of Hungary has been snowing continuously since Monday, the nepszava.hu server stated on Wednesday, according to which such intense snowfall has not been recorded in this country in the past ten years. The unfavorable weather significantly affected the functioning of the railways and the Budapest transport company BKK, which reported delays and cancellations of connections on Wednesday, reports TASR correspondent in Budapest.
Due to the snow situation, kilometers of traffic jams were created on several highways, and the winter weather also affected the operation of the Ferenc Liszt International Airport in Budapestwhich announced on Tuesday evening that flights may also be cancelled. According to the Minister of Construction and Transport, János Lázár, traffic is slowed down on all railway lines, but train connections are secured.
The Netherlands’ Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of the largest in Europe, announced on Wednesday the cancellation of at least 700 flights due to snow and wind. This happened after several days of disrupted traffic in the country due to adverse weather, TASR reports, according to a report by AFP.
More than 1,000 people spent the night at the airport, Schiphol said, adding that it had prepared camping beds and offered them breakfast. The number of canceled flights is expected to increase further during the day.
Heavy snow and frost on Wednesday morning significantly disrupted air traffic in France as well, especially in Paris and its surroundings. Around 100 flights were canceled at Charles de Gaulle Airport and another 40 flights did not depart from Orly Airportsaid Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot. Other Western European countries, including Belgium and Britain, also experienced canceled flights, stopped bus connections and delays.
