Turn heating on or off during ventilation? Most people do it wrong

In winter, we want to rely on feeling comfortable at home. The warmth of the home is nice, but apart from that we also have to think about the quality of the air. Although ventilation and heating seem to go against each other, everything needs to be combined without unnecessary loss of dearly acquired degrees.

Coordinating ventilation and heating so that we do not have stale and unpleasant air at home, but on the other hand, so that we do not heat unnecessarily, is a logistically rather complex task. Nevertheless, it is possible to combine everything without unnecessary expenses. It is not about wasting energy, but about maintaining standard living comfort. But what to do with the radiator when we open the window?

It’s only for a short time

At the moment when, as it is right in winter – that is, only for a few minutes, but intensively, we feel that we should leave the heating running. It’s only a short time, and besides, it’s also about keeping the room from getting unnecessarily cold. Such an approach may seem logical, but it is certainly not ideal.

Do not leave the heating on

If we ventilate while the heating is on, we must be aware that the regulators on the radiators notice a drop in temperature and therefore try to equalize it by increasing the output. In practice, this means that on the one hand, the heat goes out the window, while the heating system tries to “catch up” with everything, which is not only inefficient, but also uneconomical.

Better turn off the heating

Experts in this field therefore recommend a simple but unfortunately often overlooked routine: even with a burst of rapid and intense ventilation that lasts only a few minutes, lower the thermostatic head of the radiator to zero. This will prevent the system from unnecessarily comparing the temperature fluctuation when cold air is blowing on it from the outside. Then turn on the radiator to the standard level a few minutes after closing the windows, i.e. when the cold air gets out of the sensor’s range.

Do not leave the vent open

What should we definitely avoid in winter? It is clearly a slightly open window for a long time, for example on the so-called . In this case, the temperature in the room decreases, even if we don’t even notice it at first, and the heating is able to balance everything for some time. But as soon as we notice that an extra layer of clothing would be appropriate, an unnecessary amount of energy will already be consumed.

Watch out for mold and other problems

In addition to saving energy, proper ventilation in the cold months will bring long-term benefits for health and the quality of living. Unventilated spaces are more prone to mold, moisture and carbon dioxide build-up, which can cause fatigue, bad mood or headache.
Just as certain rules apply to ventilation, experts also formulate savings options for heating itself. Individual rooms do not need to be heated to the same temperature; while 20-21°C is ideal in the living room, bedrooms and other less-used rooms can be cooler. You will see that such responsible behavior can be recognized on the annual energy bill.
