The Supreme Court of Appeal in Prague confirmed a nine-year prison sentence and preventive detention for a seventeen-year-old youth who stabbed two saleswomen in a store in Hradec Králové last February. The defendant confessed to the crime, but did not agree to the amount of the sentence and the imposition of detention. The court rejected his appeal, so the verdict is final. According to Noviniek, the chairman of the appeals panel, Jiří Bednář, reminded that the young man did not regret the act, did not apologize to the survivors and did not show any self-reflection. Moreover, he planned his act, looked for targets, even considered an attack in a kindergarten. The judge also emphasized that the defendant committed the act brutally and without reason and approached his actions cynically.
The court therefore considers the nine-year sentence correct. The sentence of protective detention was imposed on him because the young man suffers from an incurable paraphilia, i.e. a form of sexual deviation, and there is a risk of recidivism. He has to pay approximately 20 million crowns (more than 824,000 euros) to the survivors and the health insurance company.
Due to the defendant’s age, the trial was closed to the public, and due to the fact that he was a juvenile, he could be sentenced to a maximum of ten years for double murder. A young man in a shopping area in Hradec Králové last February attacked two saleswomen aged 19 and 38 with a knife. He attacked one directly in the store and the other in the background. Both later succumbed to their injuries, despite the efforts of the rescuers, who resuscitated them for almost 45 minutes.
