Catalan farmers cut the AP-7 and N-2 in Girona against the agreement with the Mercosur countries | News from Catalonia

The discomfort of the primary sector grows after several health crises in Catalonia

The Country

Organizations of Catalan farmers and ranchers have resumed protests against the Mercosur agreement this Thursday through roadblocks in different parts of Catalonia. Since the early hours of Thursday, groups of agricultural professionals with their tractors have been cutting the AP-7 and the N-2 in Pontós and Borrassà (Girona) and during the morning new cuts are expected at various points on the main Catalan road network.

The protests are led by organizations that emerged as a result of the protests and have a less organized structure than traditional unions. The farmers who are protesting today do so with the argument that if the trade agreement with the Mercosur countries is signed, products will enter the European Union that will give them unfair competition. They also argue that in these countries phytosanitary conditions are more lax than in Europe and that this can be detrimental to the health of consumers and also farm animals.

In Catalonia, the discomfort of the primary sector is also very palpable due to the latest crises that the sector has suffered. To the outbreak of African swine fever that has forced the slaughter of thousands of farm pigs, there are other outbreaks affecting cattle farms, especially in the province of Girona. Just yesterday, a new case was detected on a farm in Empordà in an area that, in theory, should have been fully vaccinated against this disease that forces many animals to be sacrificed and paralyzes the market in the affected areas.
