Events in Planalto and the STF mark 3 years of attacks on the headquarters of Power

O Planalto Palace this Thursday (8) is holding the event that marks the three years since the episode that became known as “January 8”, when protesters invaded and vandalized the buildings of the Three Powers calling for a coup d’état.

With the presence of the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the ceremony will also feature the participation of political parties and trade unions. According to Planalto, the event aims to “reinforce the values of democracy”.

Scheduled to start at 10 am, the ceremony should be broadcast on a big screen for the external public, with Lula walking down the Planalto ramp. Military personnel and state ministers must also participate in the event.

Over the last few years, the act has been marked by the absence of the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber and, this year, the senator Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) and the deputy Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) will maintain the custom and will not attend the ceremony.

Veto to the Dosimetry PL

As shown by the CNN BrazilLula must use the ceremony to veto the Dosimetry PL (bill). The Chief Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Guilherme Boulos (Psol), also organized a mobilization against the amnesty with the Brasil Popular and Brasil sem Medo fronts.

Approved by Congress in 2025, the text reduces the sentences of those convicted of undemocratic acts. One of the beneficiaries is the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), sentenced to 27 years in prison for participating in a coup plot.

This is the first year that the act will be carried out with the defendants accused of leading the attempted coup d’état convicted.

In addition to those directly involved in the depredation of the Three Powers, the STF (Supreme Federal Court) also condemned those involved in the plan involving the Armed Forces to remove Lula from power and keep Jair Bolsonaro in the Presidency.

For the first time in Brazilian history, generals were arrested for participating in a coup plot. The fact has been highlighted by Lula in his speeches, who says that Brazil gave a “lesson in democracy” to the world.

Defense of sovereignty

In addition to the veto of the Dosimetry PL, there is the expectation that Lula will defend national sovereignty during his speech.

The head of the Executive should not mention, however, the crisis involving Venezuela and the United States. On Saturday (3), US forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The idea is to prevent the situation in Venezuela from stealing the spotlight and gaining prominence among the protesters who are at the event.

Judiciary will also hold an event

The STF will hold, from 2:30 pm, the opening of the exhibition called “January 8: Hands of Reconstruction”.

Afterwards, the documentary “Unshaken Democracy” will be shown. Afterwards, the Supreme Court promotes a conversation with press professionals and, finally, a panel with experts.

Among the ministers, only the presence of the President of the Court, Edson Fachin, has been confirmed so far. The Judiciary is on recess for the entire month of January.

This is the third consecutive year that the STF has held events in memory of the criminal acts of January 8, 2023. But this is the first time that the event has taken place after the conviction of those responsible for organizing the attacks.
