At an event at the (Supreme Federal Court) to remember 2023, the minister said that the democratic rule of law “is in crisis in the contemporary world”, but that Brazil is “setting a great example of resilience”.
“Nevertheless, memory is an alert and a warning, because the price of democracy and freedom is indeed eternal vigilance”, said the president of the Supreme Court, at an event this Thursday (8).
Fachin held an event at the court headquarters, whose building was the most vandalized in Praça dos Três Poderes in the coup attacks. He was alongside representatives of other higher courts, the Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski, the AGU (Attorney General of the Union), Jorge Messias, and the president of the OAB (Brazilian Bar Association), Beto Simonetti.
Lewandowski is a retired Supreme Court minister, who resigned from the Justice portfolio. Messias, in turn, was nominated by the president (PT) for a vacancy on the STF.
In his speech, Fachin also apologized to the minister, rapporteur of the processes regarding the coup attacks, and one of the main targets of criticism from supporters of the former president (PL).
“Allow me now to praise the work of Minister Alexandre de Moraes in conducting the investigations and criminal actions that arose from that infamous day — and to emphasize, precisely, the exact nature of his actions,” said Fachin.
“There are those who confuse and take firmness for boasting. And minister Alexandre de Moraes stood firm as a duty of office, with personal and family sacrifices that it is not my place to list, and he was where he needed to be. Not out of bravado, but because it was his office — the same one that we swore to exercise, with our lives if necessary, in the impermanence of our positions”, said the minister.
This Thursday, the STF released a documentary about the workers who cleaned up the rubble from the January 8 attacks and rebuilt the courthouse.
In the morning, Fachin missed the event on January 8th at Palácio do Planalto, organized by President Lula. The absence was added to that of the presidents of the Chamber, (-PB), and of , (União-AP).
There was no official justification for Fachin’s absence from Planalto, but interlocutors claim that it was an attitude of caution, as there was little information about what the ceremony would be like.
