Letter about 8/1 says that date reminds victory of democracy – 01/08/2026 – Panel

A manifesto that will be read this Thursday (8) at the USP Faculty of Law says that the day has become a date to celebrate the victory of democracy over the coup acts of three years ago.

The document, which already has more than 200 signatures, will be presented at Largo de São Francisco, at an event promoted by PT-SP, the XI de Agosto academic center and the Prerrogativas group.

Among those who support the document are Marco Aurélio de Carvalho, coordinator of the legal group Prerogativas, senator Teresa Leitão (PT-PE) and lawyer Pierpaolo Bottini.

“The day marks, firstly, a historic civic celebration in defense of democracy. It must, however, also be a date on which all of us, Brazilians, redouble our attention to any and all internal or external threats to the Brazilian Democratic State of Law and our national sovereignty”, states the text.

“January 8th has since been the national date to celebrate the victory of democracy, as memory is fundamental so that new acts of this type are not tolerated”, he continues.

There are also references to , in an excerpt that says that the signatories of the letter defend the democratic order and Brazilian sovereignty, “so that our country is never seen as the backyard of any other nation.”

“We defend, in an unrestricted manner, respect for the Brazilian Democratic Rule of Law and the sovereignty of Brazil and our region”, write the entities.

“We, the signatories, defend that Democracy is not imposed by force, but is built daily by participation, dialogue, popular will and cooperation between citizens, respecting the self-determination of peoples, human rights, the national legal system and international law, as well as multilateral cooperation bodies.”
