MP investigates case of 7-month-old baby who was allegedly attacked in a daycare center in Valongo

Girl suffered several bruises on her face after allegedly being attacked inside the institution. It will have been left alone in a room.

The Public Ministry is investigating the case of a 7-month-old baby who allegedly suffered injuries in October at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Valongo daycare center, a source from the Attorney General’s Office revealed this Thursday to the Lusa agency.

“The existence of an investigation related to the matter in question is confirmed. It is under investigation and subject to judicial secrecy”, replied the PGR.

The newspaper writes in its today’s edition that the “girl suffered several bruises on her face – cheeks, nose, forehead, chin and eyebrows – after allegedly being attacked inside the daycare center” at Santa Casa.

According to that diary, the girl “was left alone in a room and two educators and an assistant were absent”.

The reaction of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Valongo

In a statement, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Valongo, in the district of Porto, confirms the occurrence of October 27th, involving a 7-month-old baby, revealing that “the appropriate internal procedures were immediately activated, with first aid being provided to the child and communication made to the family, who promptly went to the facilities”.

The institution points out that, shortly after learning of the facts, “it initiated the competent disciplinary process, with a worker being preventively suspended”, without specifying whether it is one of the two educators or the assistant, and that the process is in the “evidence collection and fact-finding phase”.

After “deeply regretting” what happened and expressing “total solidarity with the child and his family”, Santa Casa emphasizes that the Nursery Day Care Center “has been operating for around 30 years, with no record of similar occurrences, enjoying public recognition and a good name”.
