Ruben Amorim receives compensation of 11.6 million euros but has to pay part of it to the State: this is the amount that will 'fall' into his account

The dismissal of Ruben Amorim from Manchester United implies the payment of a large compensation, but the amount that will actually reach the Portuguese coach’s account will be well below the amount initially announced. At issue is a sum associated with the contract period that still remained to be fulfilled.

The relationship between the coach and the English club was scheduled to end in June 2027. Without an agreement between the parties, a scenario that the British press rejects, the termination forces Manchester United to financially compensate the 40-year-old coach.

How much is the unfulfilled contract worth?

According to the newspaper Correio da Manhã, the gross value of the compensation amounts to 11.6 million euros, corresponding to the salaries that Ruben Amorim would be entitled to receive until the end of the contract. This is automatic compensation provided for in English employment law.

According to the same source, this amount will not be received in full by the Portuguese coach. UK tax legislation places a significant burden on claims of this type, substantially reducing the net value.

After applying the taxes due, Amorim should be left with 6.3 million euros. In other words, practically half of the compensation will be retained by the British State. The publication adds that this difference results from the tax rules applicable to compensatory payments, which vary depending on the levels and nature of the contractual relationship, and are not negotiable by the beneficiary.

Firing invoice for the club

In addition to the compensation paid to the coach, he points out that Manchester United faces additional costs associated with the termination. The club will also have to pay around one million euros in Social Security contributions.

This charge increases the total cost of the dismissal to values well above the 11.6 million initially indicated, at a time when the club is going through a period of internal reorganization and sporting instability.

The management’s decision was not well received by the coach, especially taking into account previous statements by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who, in October, had guaranteed three years to put the team back on the path to victory.

The tension will have increased due to the deterioration of the relationship between Amorim and the football director, Jason Wilcox, in particular due to differences related to the hiring policy and the decision-making margin granted to the coach.

Divergences in the market and in squad management

According to RTP, the first signs of conflict emerged in the summer, when Amorim appointed Ollie Watkins as a priority for the attack, but saw the club invest 75 million euros in Benjamin Sesko, from Leipzig.

The public station adds that disagreements ensued around Antoine Semenyo, considered too expensive by the coach, and the use of young people like Kobbie Mainoo, a situation interpreted by Amorim as a lack of strategic alignment.

The words that made the situation worse

At the press conference, the coach was clear about his expectations. “I came to be a manager at Manchester United, not just a coach. I will continue for another 18 months or until the management decides to change. That was the agreement”, he stated, quoted by RTP.

The coach added that he wanted transversal influence on the club’s decisions and highlighted difficulties in managing external pressure. On a sporting level, Amorim leaves Old Trafford with 24 wins in 63 games, sixth place in the English League and a Europa League final reached last season.
