The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed this Wednesday in Nicosia his hope that the war in his country, caused by the Russian invasion of 2022, can end this semester, during the current Cypriot presidency of the European Union (EU). “As Cyprus begins its (European) presidency, peace negotiations have reached a new level of intensity. We are working very, very actively: Ukraine, our European partners and, of course, the United States and all members of our coalition of the willing. And it is possible – and we sincerely hope – that this war could end during your presidency,” the president said. “We all understand how wars like this end: When the pressure is strong enough to exhaust the source of war, peace comes. That pressure exists now and the EU plays a key role in maintaining it,” he said.
