Whether it’s called a spa or local tax, a bed tax or a tourist tax: this year travelers have to be prepared for the relevant fees to either increase or be added. The purpose of the taxes, which vary greatly depending on the country, city and region, is to finance the maintenance of tourist infrastructure, to direct tourist flows or simply to plug budget holes: from July 1, 2026, Vienna’s local tax will initially increase to five percent. From July 1, 2027, eight percent will probably have to be paid.
