Decathlon takes action: lowest salary is already higher than the €920 national minimum wage

Decathlon Portugal’s salary policy entered 2026 with relevant changes, placing the minimum base salary above the national minimum wage. The company decided to set this level at 1,000 euros gross per month, exceeding the 920 euros that will come into force as the national minimum wage from this month onwards.

The measure applies to employees with an open-ended, full-time contract, 40 hours per week and a completed trial period. The objective, according to the company, is to align remuneration with an internal valorization strategy, in a context of general updating of minimum wages in the country.

Revised base salary for open-ended contracts

According to information released by the ECO news portal, the new value of 1,000 euros gross corresponds only to the base salary. To this amount are added the meal allowance and monthly performance bonuses, which depend on the individual and collective results achieved by the workers.

According to the same source, these awards seek to reflect the direct contribution of each employee to the company’s objectives, maintaining a variable remuneration model that already exists in the Decathlon structure in Portugal.

In addition to the internal minimum wage, the company also reviewed the entry salary for middle leadership roles. The publication writes that positions, such as those responsible for sports, now have a base salary of 1,350 euros gross per month.

When considering the meal allowance and exemption from working hours, the guaranteed gross monthly salary of these professionals rises to 1,853 euros, also maintaining access to monthly bonuses associated with performance.

Measure came into force at the beginning of the year

The changes now announced do not have immediate effects on pay slips. According to the same source, the new salary values came into force on the first day of the year and are being reflected in the respective processing from that date onwards.

In the note sent to newsrooms, Decathlon emphasizes that these decisions are part of a logic of corporate responsibility. The same source mentions that the general director of Decathlon Portugal, José Fonseca, highlights the importance of guaranteeing conditions considered fair and sustainable for workers.

“It is our responsibility to guarantee fair, sustainable conditions and in line with our values, because we want each employee to be even more successful in the project and in the growth of Decathlon Portugal”, says the person in charge, quoted by .
