EU-Mercosur agreement will be signed on January 17, in Paraguay, says chancellor

Pablo Quirno said that the European Union ‘will eliminate tariffs for 92% of exports’ from countries in the South American bloc and ‘grant preferential access to another 7.5%’

The agreement between Mercosur and the European Union will be on January 17, in Paraguay, reported this Friday (9) the Argentine chancellor, Pablo Quirno, through a publication on his profile on X (formerly Twitter), after . The treaty has been negotiated since 1999 with Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay — founders of the South American bloc — and provides for the creation of the largest free trade zone on the planet, with more than 700 million consumers.

“We will sign on January 17th, in Paraguay, a historic agreement and the most ambitious between the blocs,” wrote Quirno.

With this “Argentina and the Mercosur countries will have preferential access to the European Union, the third largest global economy, a market of 450 million people, which represents around 15% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product”, he added.

The chancellor also said that “the European Union will eliminate tariffs for 92% of exports and grant preferential access to another 7.5%”. “In this way, 99% of Mercosur’s agricultural exports will benefit,” he explained.

The agreement faces which fears the impact of the massive arrival of South American meat, rice, honey and soy, in exchange for the export of European vehicles, machinery, cheese and wine to Mercosur.
