Do it with hydrangeas in winter! Without it, they will not bloom in spring

They can be found in many gardens and allotments. They came to Europe from Asia at the beginning of the 18th century. Hydrangeas almost immediately won the hearts of Europeans, becoming one of the most popular ornamental shrubs on the old continent. Although there are many varieties of hydrangeas, the most commonly grown in Poland are the garden, bouquet and climbing varieties.

it is more resistant to frost and does not require covering in winter. However, it is worth remembering that when temperatures drop below -10 degrees Celsius, this variety also needs support in the form of mounds of needles, cones or leaves around the roots and a mulch made of agrotextile. Garden hydrangea must be wintered properly. It is less resistant to weather conditions. Covers should be installed in late fall and removed in spring after the last frost has passed.

Many people forget that hydrangeas need to be checked regularly in winter. Even if they are winterized properly, they require inspection. It is worth checking whether strong winds have not damaged the agrotextile cover. In this case, they should be repaired immediately. Remember to cover the bush tightly but leave space around the shoots. Tie the covering around the roots, making sure it is not too tight. Also regularly check the condition of the mounds around the bushes. It may happen that they will be dug up by animals or destroyed as a result of heavy snowfall.

Snow is the biggest factor. Thick layers of wet snow may accumulate on agrotextile covers. They become heavier and heavier and may eventually break the hydrangeas. This is especially dangerous in the case of garden hydrangeas that bloom on last year’s shoots. Their mechanical destruction by snow may prevent the bush from blooming in the next season. Always remove snow caps from hydrangeas. Do it gently, preferably using a broom or brush. After each major snowfall, check whether the snow cap has not fallen again.
