List of Bolsonaro’s books in prison has George Orwell – 01/08/2026 – Politics

The defense of (PL) asked this Thursday (8) the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (), the inclusion of the former president in a program to redeem his sentence for reading.

Among the titles expected to be available to the person sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for the coup plot are “The Animal Revolution” and “1984”, by George Orwell, “Diário de Fernando: nos Cárceres da Brasileira”, by Frei Betto, “Canção para Ninar Menino Grande”, by Conceição Evaristo, as well as works by authors such as Ailton Krenak, Lázaro Ramos, Machado de Assis and Carla Madeira.

Remission through study is provided for in article 126 of the Criminal Execution Law and is regulated by resolution No. 391/2021 of the National Council of Justice (). According to the national standard, prisoners can reduce days of their sentence by reading books and submitting reviews, without censorship regarding the content of the works available in the prison unit’s collection.

In the Federal District, however, the Department of Education maintains a specific program, the Remission of Sentence for Reading, which requires the reading of previously selected works. The complete list is available at .

The selection also includes “Pagu: A Luta de Cada Um”, by Lia Zatz; “Um Defeito de Cor”, by Ana Maria Gonçalves; “Letters to My Grandmother”, by Djamila Ribeiro; “Purple Hibiscus”, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; “Never Stop Trying” by Michael Jordan; “The Handmaid’s Tale”, by Margaret Atwood; and “Endless Night” by Agatha Christie.

This requirement for a closed list differs from the CNJ resolution, which ensures the possibility of redemption by reading any work from the collection chosen by the prisoner.

After judicial authorization, the participant has 21 to 30 days to complete the reading and another 10 days to submit the report or review, which will be evaluated by a committee. Each book read corresponds to the redemption of four days of sentence, limited to 12 works per year — which allows up to 48 days to be saved in a 12-month period.
