Lula celebrates Mercosur-EU agreement: “Historic day for multilateralism”

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) celebrated the ratification of the endorsement of the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. This Friday (9), the European Council endorsed the decision.

“Historic day for multilateralism. After 25 years of negotiation, the Mercosur-European Union Agreement was approved, one of the largest free trade agreements in the world. The decision approved by the European side unites two blocs that, together, add up to 718 million people and a GDP of US$22.4 trillion”, he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Lula also stated that “in an international scenario of growing protectionism and unilateralism, the agreement is a sign in favor of international trade as a factor for economic growth, with benefits for both blocs”.

“The text expands alternatives for Brazilian exports and European productive investments and simplifies trade rules for both sides. A victory for dialogue, negotiation and commitment to cooperation and integration between countries and blocs”, added the head of Planalto.
