Roses are a classic, but Japanese azalea is, according to many people, more beautiful because in winter it doesn’t scare you with its bare shoots. It retains its small, leathery leaves all year round, which is impressive, among others. due to their unusual, deep colors.
Its shades range from green, through brown and burgundy to purple, which creates a wonderful contrast with the white snow. The Japanese azalea bush also has an aesthetic, cushion-shaped shape, so it always looks elegant.
It creates interesting compositions, especially with coniferous species (they look fabulous against their background), heather and heather. It is true that they do not have an intense scent like most species of roses. Their scent is faint, but that’s how it is in nature – there’s always something for something.
Growing Japanese azalea is not particularly complicated, but you must remember a few things. The key to success is to provide the bushes with appropriate soil. The substrate should have a low pH. Sour peat will work great. Otherwise, the plant may not want to bloom profusely.
In addition, the Japanese azalea thrives in semi-shaded places and sheltered from frosty winds, which protects its evergreen leaves from drying out. It does not require such complicated and regular cutting as roses and is less susceptible to typical pests. Spraying it is also not recommended.
When it comes to caring for Japanese azalea, it is worth watering it regularly, also in the colder seasons, but don’t overdo it, because it doesn’t like too dry or wet ground.
When watering it, be careful and do not pour water over the flowers, because then they will stick together and lose their color. There is one more thing to keep in mind. Before winter, young plants should be protected against frost. Especially during harsh winters.
