Tensions in Minneapolis after deadly ICE raid. Schools are moving away and people are grieving

The school district in Minneapolis will allow students to switch to distance learning, responding to tensions after an intervention by immigration agents that left a young woman dead. The governor has declared a Day of Unity and the city is calling for an independent investigation into the tragedy.

The school administration in Minneapolis will offer families of school children the possibility of distance learning for a month. The measure is related to a crackdown by federal immigration authorities in that city. The authorities announced this to the teachers in e-mails, the content of which was seen by the AP agency, writes TASR.

  • An ICE agent fatally shot a local woman, Renee Nicole Good.

The move comes as U.S. President Donald Trump is deploying 2,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to the area, and people in Minneapolis are shocked and outraged by the case of local young woman Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by an ICE agent on Wednesday, January 7, during a raid.

Day of unity in memory of the victim

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declared Friday a Day of Unity in memory of the victims of the Minneapolis shooting.

“While we cannot bring Renee Nicole Good back to life, we can honor her memory by coming together and standing up for dignity, democracy, compassion and our shared values,” Walz said.

A moment of silence was observed for the victim at 11:00 a.m. local time in Minnesota and across the country.

Doubts about the investigation

Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey held a press conference Friday to express his doubts about the impartiality of the investigation into the death of Renee Nicole Good. The investigation is being conducted by federal authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Therefore, Frey called for the involvement of local investigators, which subsequently increased the tension in the city’s relations with the administration of President Donald Trump.
