The famous trilogy, inspired by JRR Tolkien’s classic and directed by Peter Jackson, will return to Portuguese cinemas this January to mark the 25th anniversary of the first film, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”, launched in 2001.
The new year brings back to cinemas an iconic trilogy that celebrates 25 years and continues to win over Portuguese audiences. Throughout the month of January, Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” returns to the big screen with the screening of the three films in the saga.
The announcement was made through the company’s social media similar to what is happening in other countries. The first film in the saga, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” (2001), premieres next day January 16th. O “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (2002) hits theaters the next day, January 17thand the last film, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003), premiere January 18th.
The three films will be shown in theaters at Cinema Cityavailable in Alegro de Alfragide, Alegro de Setúbal, Campo Pequeno and Leiria, according to the of the cinema chain in Portugal.

The main actors in the cast are Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, John Rhys-Davies, Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee e Sean Bean.
A new film on the way
In May 2024, the announced a new film in the saga, titled with the confirmed participation of Andy Serkisnot paper “Gollum”e Peter Jackson as director, also counting on the screenwriters Fran Walsh e Philippa Boyens in the production of the film. The film is scheduled to be released next year in 2027.
Recently, Ian McKellen, the eternal “Gandalf”confirmed that both his character and that of “Frodo” will appear in this new film. In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) on January 5, the actor from 86 years revealed that filming will begin next May. For now, the participation of Elijah Wood not paper “Frodo” has not yet been confirmed.
